This has been proven in research, and it's why so many injections - and even surgeries - don't actually work to correct your problem long-term. The better you move, the more you move, and the more balanced your movement is as you age, the less likely you'll experience pain from something like a bulging disc. What DOES vary with age is how well and how consistently you move. How is this possible? It's because things like bulging discs, and even small tears in your cartilage, are a normal part of aging. One person will experience debilitating pain while the other lives pain free. You could have two people with the exact same bulging disc on their MRI. The example we used in our workshop was bulging discs. Eventually over time, this will lead to various structures inside of your joint becoming irritated, resulting in pain. Mechanical pain is exactly what it sounds like - it's caused by your body's "mechanics.“ Poor movement patterns or posture over the years will cause imbalances in your joints. And it is the likely reason why your previous steroid or cortisone injection didn't work.

If you have good days and bad days, your pain comes and goes, certain activities flare you up while others don't bother you at all - you likely have a "mechanical problem" and not an inflammatory problem. We talked a lot about this in our online neck and shoulder workshop earlier this week.

In fact, 80% of the time movement will take care of your pain, meaning only a small portion of you will truly benefit from something like a cortisone or steroid injection. This is how we know you will likely benefit from an injection. Therefore, simply changing your position or moving a certain way won't reduce your pain at all. In fact, the inflammatory process signals your body to protect itself by NOT moving. When you've got true inflammation around a nerve or inside a joint, movement doesn't help. It's rare to have inflammation and not experience pain, but you can definitely have pain in the absence of inflammation. Most people assume that if there is pain, there is inflammation - but that is simply not true. Well this is where most of the confusion lies. This could be your spine, hip, knee or shoulder therefore, when inflammation is confirmed to be the root cause of your pain, and it's not going away either with medication, on its own, or with corrective movement strategies (like what we prescribe in our office), a cortisone injection will likely help!īut what if it's not inflammation and how do you know? Well first, it helps to understand when an injection might be helpful and when it should be avoided.Ĭortisone or steroid injections are typically done to reduce localized inflammation inside a joint. So what do you do when you've seemingly tried everything and the injections don't work? And they definitely don't want more injections. The majority of the people we work with are seeking pain relief for their back, knee, neck or shoulder WITHOUT the need for surgery and other procedures.

When one (or several) injections fail to fix your problem, often the next recommended step is surgery. A big reason why folks come to see us is because they’ve had cortisone or steroid injections in the past but the pain keeps coming back.
